Which package manager VLOS use?
VLOS use Portage as package manager, it performs many key functions. Portage is also a package building and installation system. When you want to install a package, you type emerge packagename, at which point Portage automatically builds a custom version of the package to your exact specifications, optimizing it for your hardware and ensuring that the optional features in the package that you want are enabled -- and those you don't want aren't.
Portage also keeps your system up-to-date. Typing emerge -uD world -- one command -- will ensure that all the packages that you want on your system are updated automatically.
Why VLOS use anaconda instead of gentoo installer or Suse Yast?
VLOS begin using Victor Prada patch to make anaconda installer work with gentoo portage system. Since this we have contribute lot of code improving lot of things in anaconda installer.
Why emerging a package takes too long?
Emerging packages can takes too long when updating the system. When you emerge a program the portage first download the source code from the mirror on the net; then begin compiling from scratch to build and install this program in your system. Emerging big programs like KDE or OpenOffice can take from 6 hours up to 10 hours, depending on the power of your system. You can use our binary repository to avoid this issue.
